Description

Class covers many aspects of being a leader such as:

  • Leadership Styles
  • Group Dynamics
  • Day Hike Planning
  • Map & Compass
  • Leadership Opportunities
  • Leader Liability
  • Screening Hike Participants
  • Critical Incident Stress Debriefing
  • Accident Scene Management
  • Leave No Trace Principles

Includes both classroom and outdoors role-playing.

Weekend Schedule will be provided at registration on Saturday. Please meet at the Carriage House

Facilities: Meals and Lodging in the Carriage House; Class work will be in the Mott-Van Winkle Classroom

Housekeeping:

Cooking prep and clean-up chores will be shared, be prepared to lend a hand.
Everyone is responsible for end of program clean-up of the facility.
Two heated dorms (one for men, one for women) contain bunks and mattresses.
Bathrooms and showers are adjacent to the bunkrooms.

Sturdy walking shoes and/or hiking boots
Rain gear
Outdoor clothing
Daypack
Water bottle
Sleeping bag or linens and blankets*
Pillow and case*
Washcloth, towel and personal items*
Earplugs (if desired)*

Litchfield weather can be COLD and we will spend time outside.


Food & Lodging: Friday evening lodging is optional for those of you coming from out of town. There will be no official activity until Saturday morning.

Meals provided include Saturday Lunch & Dinner, Sunday Breakfast & Lunch. As the facilities are limited there will be an ample but set menu. If you have unique dietary needs, you should bring any foods that you require with you. Please let me know asap if you have any food allergies or restrictions. We'll be sharing lodging and meals with another event, the Club's Adventure Travel training, in order to keep costs down. Our training facility (classroom) will be separate.

You may want to have dinner in Litchfield if you plan to arrive at the Carriage House Friday night. Please be sure to park in the parking area to the right of the Carriage House.

Cellular service has improved recently but past participants have noted that cell service can be limited at White Memorial.

From Rt 84/Hartford: From Rt 84/Danbury:
-take Rt 84 west to exit 39/Rt 4 (Farmington) -take Rt 84 east to Waterbury, Rte 8 north
-follow Rt 4 to Harwinton -follow Rt 8 north to Rt 118 west
-go straight onto Rt 118 west (Litchfield)

From Rt 8/Waterbury: From Rt 8/Winsted and North:
-take Rt 8 north to Rt 118 west (Litchfield) -take Rt 8 south to Rt 118 west

From all points above:
-follow Rte 118 to Litchfield
-follow signs around Litchfield Green to Rte 202 west
-follow Rte 202 west approximately 2 miles
-turn left onto Bissell Road and immediate right into White Memorial
-follow drive to the Carriage House, large building on the right
-park in the parking lot to the right of the Carriage House
-registration Friday evening – 7:15 – 9:00 p.m. & Saturday morning from 7:00 to 8:00am
